The City of Detroit has announced that it is now the largest city in the United States to deploy HAAS Alert Safety Cloud technology across its fire and police vehicle fleets.
The system is designed to improve road safety by sending real-time alerts to nearby drivers when emergency vehicles are approaching. These alerts can appear through connected vehicle systems, navigation apps, and compatible smartphone platforms, warning motorists to slow down, move over, or proceed with caution.
City officials say the technology is intended to reduce collisions involving emergency responders while also improving safety for the general public. Emergency vehicle crashes remain a significant risk nationwide, particularly at intersections and during high-speed responses.
The HAAS Alert Safety Cloud automatically broadcasts the presence of emergency vehicles when lights or sirens are activated, reducing reliance on visual or audible cues alone. Officials say this additional layer of warning is especially helpful in poor weather, heavy traffic, or low-visibility conditions.
Detroit’s deployment covers both police and fire vehicles, representing a citywide approach to responder safety. Public safety leaders emphasized that protecting first responders while they perform critical duties is a priority, and that technology can play an important role in achieving that goal.
The city joins a growing number of municipalities using connected-vehicle safety systems, though Detroit’s scale makes it the largest deployment of its kind to date. Officials say the system will continue to be monitored and expanded as part of broader traffic safety and smart-city initiatives.
