Detroit police responded around midday to reports of a child shot in a van parked outside a business in the city. Investigators said a mother had briefly gone inside a nearby restaurant while her five children remained in the vehicle.
While the children were inside, one gained access to a firearm that had been left unsecured in the vehicle. The weapon discharged, fatally wounding a 6‑year‑old girl. Authorities said it remains unclear whether the shot was self‑inflicted or fired by another child.
Emergency responders attempted to assist the child, but she was pronounced dead. Police are continuing their investigation, including determining how the firearm was obtained and whether criminal charges may follow.
